Start with the shape and condition of the well

Send a wide photo showing the window, the entire well and the surrounding ground or concrete. Add close-ups of the rim, attachment points and any existing cover. This helps us understand the shape, available support and access before discussing a design. A round, rectangular or irregular opening needs its own measurements; a cover should not be sized from appearance alone.

Measurements to send with your photos

For an initial quote, include the following information for each well:

• Width: the opening from side to side, measured at more than one point if it changes.
• Projection: the distance from the building wall to the outer edge of the well.
• Shape: show curved edges, corners and any irregular sections in a photo or sketch.
• Clearance: photograph the window as it opens, nearby vents, trim and any existing hardware.
• Quantity: label the photos and measurements when you need more than one cover.
• Location: include your city or ZIP code and tell us whether you are replacing an existing cover.

Use the same measurement units throughout your sketch. Approximate measurements help with the first review; final dimensions and attachment details may need to be checked at the property before fabrication.

Tell us how the window is used

If the window is used for emergency escape, say so at the beginning of the request. Access from inside, the opening method and applicable project requirements need to be considered before the design is agreed. Do not assume that a fixed cover, a reference photo or an existing cover is suitable for your particular window.

Also explain what you want the cover to do. Concerns about access, children, pets, debris, ventilation and appearance can lead to different design discussions. A metal cover should not be assumed to be a waterproof enclosure or a rated walking surface; any required performance needs to be specified and reviewed.

Agree on the construction, finish and installation

The quote should identify the cover layout, supporting frame, opening arrangement, attachment method and finish. Explain whether you want a removable section or another access arrangement so its suitability can be reviewed. Surface preparation, coating, on-site measurements and installation are separate details to confirm in the scope.

For a replacement, send photos of corrosion, damaged welds and the condition of the supporting rim. The existing support may affect whether a new cover can use the same attachment points. Material choices and fabrication details are discussed after reviewing the opening and intended use.
